Days 5 and 6

This is the beginning of a two day journey across the Nevada Desert from Lee Vining to Cedar City in Utah

This 20 second video records the "Blast Off".

We eventually make it to an old mining town called Tonopah where we stay for the night as it is almost 200 miles to the next hotel. The next morning we visit the old mine which is now closed  and has an interesting museum and tour.

Tonopah did once again revive in the 1960's in a rather controversial manner, as Bob explains.

We motor on accross the desewrt and cover 300 miles to Cedar city in one day. Sometimes the scenery is fantastic, other times nothing, as this 360 degree image which I took in the afternoon shows.

It would be a bad idea not to "gas up" at every opportunity.

We stop at the only cafe along the way and I meet a new friend.

There were many rumours of alien beings along the way and we travel along the extraterrestial highway.

The only aliens we meet came all the way from Ballymote, County Sligo.

We arrive in Cedar City late and exhausted - 300 miles across the desert in one day - are we mad or what?

Total Mileage to date - 908 miles

  1. I hitch-hiked this same road in 1969 ... thanks to a J1 visa which the Trinity SRC got for me.
Doesn't seem to have changed very much over the years... but probably a bit cooler in October than July.
Great blog, great pictures, great adventure Eugene; only wish I was there!
